Volunteer here! What to expect

Your local radio needs you!

by Harriet Flitton

Have you ever dreamt of being the next Chris Evans or Zoe Ball?  Maybe you have a passion for music? Leighton Buzz radio, your local community online station is looking for local volunteers.

Currently Leighton buzz radio has a handful of volunteers, they do anything from helping with the website, the technology, social media and productions through to presenting shows.

The shows range from specialist music genres such as Solid Rock, Plenty of Seventies, A Little Bit Country and All About the 90’s (to name a few) right through to a business show, local politics and even my own show Harriet’s Happy Hour.

As a volunteer I have found many benefits; it’s a great way to give back to the local community, promoting local businesses, a hobby and connecting with like minded people. For me volunteering the past 6 months has given me a sense of purpose whilst being furloughed during the Covid-19 restrictions. As a creative individual being able to produce and present a weekly show, which has always been a dream of mine, has given me a sense of reward.

According to website happiness.com

“It’s clear the benefits of volunteering are huge – improved mental and physical health, new friends and avoiding loneliness, a sense of purpose and deeper self-confidence. In turn, all of these things will help to boost your overall happiness: a win-win situation for all involved”.

One of the benefits when I volunteered with Leighton Buzz radio, was there was a lot of scope to make my show my own and a helpful team of volunteers to support me when I started out. Plus learning a new skill provides a great sense of reward, individual growth and importantly I could do it from home in my own time. Many adults lose sight of creative hobbies, studies show that volunteering supports your physical and mental well being. The Greek philosopher Aristotle once said that the essence of life is “to serve others and do good”.

I love my volunteer role at Leighton Buzz Radio, here are some ways you can also become a volunteer.

There are lots of different opportunities to help out

Chatty?
If you are always being accused of being chatty why not have your own chat show, or do you know a lot about consumer affairs/trading standards, cooking, gardening, gadgets or other interest and think it would make a good show, why not get in touch?

Early Risers to Update the News
We are looking for volunteers to read news items and this would suit early risers. Typically this would take about half an hour once you are familiar with the the task. It will require a little research but full information will be provided. You can be involved as many days a week as you wish.

Music Fan?
If you are a fan of a music genre we don’t cover at the moment, why not have your own show or maybe become of one of the presenters of our own Buzzing Music Mix. We can teach you how to get started and support is always on hand to help you out Audio

Production Skills?
If you don’t want to be on the mic but you have audio skills we always need help with putting together quality jingles and audio.

If you would like to find out more and become a volunteer please get in touch via email studio@leightonbuzzradio.co.uk.
